Healing and Trauma

Many kids in care have experienced significant trauma, so our approach needs to focus on healing.

Key Assets Nova Scotia places trauma at the center of its focus. People who have experienced trauma often develop their own unique ways of coping and adapting to the world around them. Children and youth can sometimes display complex behaviours, like aggression towards themselves or others, as their way of coping and keeping themselves feeling safe. While a traditional approach can sometimes focus on punishing such behaviours, Key Assets, using the PersonBrain Modelâ„¢, focuses instead on supporting the young person to heal from the trauma that is ultimately responsible for the behaviours. We prioritize the creation of conditions that provide the youth with a feeling a being safe, valued, and genuinely cared for. We prioritize healing.
